The Victorians attributed meaning to flowers. We all know a red rose means ‘love’, but a daisy means ‘innocence’, a primrose means ‘youth’ and a china rose means ‘beauty’. These precious gifts I have put into a box, so that we can bring them out and carefully handle them. Tissue paper is interleaved between the linocut prints as in a Victorian collector’s album. I used linocut because of its humble beginnings, whilst it was seen as domestic it was also a very hardwearing and durable in contrast to the delicate flower images that are cut into it. A Victorian Flower Box - Lino prints on card, 12.5 x 11 x 4 cm Box, 8H x 12Wcm Books, Ed. 1/1, 2008 |
